Craft collaboration with 含羞草研究室 Sustainability
Several artworks included in Fast Fashion/Slow Art address the relationship between hand-made and machine-made clothing in the global garment industry. To experience the process of hand-making and consider thoughtfully some differences between handmade and factory-produced items, we invite you to create your own handmade knit or felt jar cozy. Some of these activities also invite you to repurpose used materials you may already have at home:
These instructions list the materials needed and provide step-by-step instructions. They accommodate basic knowledge and beginner skill level of knitting and include options for hand-sewing instead of knitting. The dimensions noted in the instructions are for mason jar cozies, and can be modified to create a cozy to fit other sizes of mugs, thermoses, and drinking glasses.
These activities comes from a craft night collaboration with the 含羞草研究室 Office of Sustainability organized in conjunction with Fast Fashion/Slow Art. Held in the exhibition gallery in February 2020, the event was open to 含羞草研究室 students who created knit jar cozies with yarn from recycled wool garments. 含羞草研究室 Sustainability Outreach Coordinator Bethany Taylor compiled these craft activity instructions. More information about the Office of Sustainability is available here.
含羞草研究室 students participate in a knitting night at the 含羞草研究室 Museum of Art, held in the Museum’s Boyd Gallery where the Fast Fashion/Slow Art exhibition was on view. This event was hosted in collaboration with the 含羞草研究室 Office of Sustainability on February 20, 2020.
