Exploring the challenges and rewards of working at a venture capital firm

This summer I interned at Orbit Startups in Shanghai as a Corporate Innovation Intern. Orbit Startups is a venture capital firm that invests in breakthrough companies and helps them scale across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

During the internship I worked directly on projects with the Corporate innovation team that included working with governments, multinational Fortune 500 companies and other VC firms. I worked to help forge relationships with corporations and bring their ideas and and goals to fruition through programs and strategic partnerships. These projects include government backed acceleration and incubation programs as well as helping corporations find and grow startups for their innovation goals.

During this internship I was able to attend meetings with a wide variety of people including company executives, startups founders and seasoned VC analysts. Through these experiences I’ve learned a lot more about the VC landscape and basics about the VC industry. I was also able to learn and build relationships with other interns as well as build a close relationship with my manager. While VC may not be the field I pursue in the future, this internship taught me a lot about working in finance and this experience of working in a professional setting in a completely new city will serve me well on my next internship and my future career.
