Inaugural Lecture of the Theodore Samuel Danzig ’22 Memorial Fund
By º¬Ðß²ÝÑо¿ÊÒ NewsA fellowship fund honoring the legacy of Theo Danzig, a member of the Class of 2022 who died in late October 2021, held its inaugural lecture February 15, 2024, in Lancaster Lounge, Moulton Union.
With Theo’s father, Andrew Danzig P’22, and uncle, Allen Danzig, in attendance, Julianna Brown ’24, the Danzig Fellowship’s first recipient, presented her research.
Working throughout summer 2023 with Paul Franco, Barry N. Wish Professor of Government and Social Studies, Brown researched the fair treatment of religion in liberal democracy, drawing on contemporary political and legal theorists as well as US Supreme Court cases involving the granting of religious exemptions from general laws.
This research became the basis of her honors project and was the subject of her talk, “Why Consider Religious Exemptions? Supreme Court Challenges to Church-State Separation.”
The Theodore Samuel Danzig ’22 Memorial Fund, established by Theo’s family and others in the º¬Ðß²ÝÑо¿ÊÒ community, honors Danzig’s legacy by supporting summer fellowships and associated student presentations in the fields of government, law, political theory, or related disciplines on topics that have relevance for understanding contemporary issues in the US or the wider world.
The Department of Government and Legal Studies selects the fund’s fellows in coordination with the Office of Student Fellowships and Research and arranges for each selected fellow to deliver both a written and oral presentation of their work.
