According to and other media, prosecutors have referred Gershkovich’s case to a trial court, where he could face a series of secret, closed-door hearings.
“Russian investigators haven’t publicly presented evidence to back up their allegation against Gershkovich. At a trial, Gershkovich would enjoy little, if any, of the due process he would be afforded in the US or other countries,” reported the WSJ, which has dismissed the forthcoming trial as a “sham.”
The , meanwhile, quoted Russian prosecutors as saying that “an investigation had established that the reporter had collected ‘secret information’ about the ‘production and repair of military equipment’ from a Russian tank factory,” accusing Gershkovich of “illegal actions using painstaking conspiratorial methods…on the instructions of the CIA.”
According to the , Gershkovich will stand trial in the city of Yekaterinburg, nearly 900 miles east of Moscow in the Ural mountains, where Gershkovich was arrested in March 2023.
Both The Wall Street Journal and the White House have strongly denied that Gershkovich was involved in any espionage activities.
