International and Field Experiences

Anthropologists illuminate the diverse ways that people live in and understand the world, from concepts of time and space to personhood.

We also encourage students to recognize the power relationships that permeate social, economic, and political relationships, including processes of research. We focus on inter-cultural encounters, historical and global connections, and local meanings—all of which are crucial to living as a global citizen in the twenty-first century.

Anthropology students enrich their coursework with experiences in many other places through study away programs and field schools.

Off-Campus Study

We encourage majors to study away as a way to enrich their understanding of anthropology, to develop language skills, and to engage with diverse issues, people, and places. Demanding academic programs or programs with a well supervised fieldwork component may be especially valuable. Ordinarily students are advised to plan study away for the junior year. Visit the Off-Campus Study website for guidelines and more.

Field Schools

Field schools provide additional hands-on training for anthropology students to learn field methods and gain experience, especially, in archaeological research.

The American Anthropological Association lists several field schools and maintains .
