The Becker Gallery features short-term exhibitions often curated by faculty members in support of their classes. These exhibitions function as teaching aids, enabling students to explore the dimensions of visual culture in relation to their studies. The first exhibition this academic year is organized by , associate professor of art history, in conjunction with Art History 256: Women and Art. The nineteenth century witnessed a tremendous change in definitions of artistic identity and success, as the model of the artist as professional gave way to the artist as bohemian. These new ideals and practices brought both new opportunities and new challenges for women artists. This exhibition explores the gendered effects of these new ideals, and investigates how women artists have adopted, challenged and played with the conventions of artistic representation and self-representation.
