Drawing on the Museum’s permanent collection, this exhibition examines the artistic process—through practices both institutionalized and individuated—in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The aim is not to present an encyclopedic survey, but to contemplate aspects of art instruction, such as life study and translation across media, that continue to be central to artistic praxis. Artists represented include John Ruskin, Winslow Homer, and John Singer Sargent.
