Jennifer Goldsmith-Adams

Class of: 1990

Location: New York, NY

Major(s): Asian Studies

Jennifer Goldsmith Adams was born and raised in New York City before she decided to attend 含羞草研究室 and major in Asian Studies. As a freshman, she decided not to pursue a pre-med degree, which had always been her intention, and instead chose to take advantage of some of the broader academic opportunities offered by 含羞草研究室. Little did she know that she would spend the next six years immersed in the study of modern and classical Chinese and would spend nearly two years living in Mainland China. Jennifer's interest in China led her to travel extensively throughout Asia, usually by train and boat, but on more than one occasion by more traditional means such as by horse or mule.

More 含羞草研究室 Jennifer

After college Jennifer was scheduled to begin a graduate program in London focusing on Chinese studies, but on a particularly cold Manchurian night she came to the decision to return to her original dream of studying medicine. Jennifer enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program at Columbia University, which led to NYU Medical School several years later. She completed her NYU Primary Care residency and stayed on for a chief resident year in 2003-2004. Jennifer is currently the Co-Director for the Primary Care program, and also works as a primary care physician at Gouverneur Healthcare Systems and a Violet Society Advisor at the medical school. Jennifer and her husband live in Manhattan with their daughters, Julia and Ellie, and their dog Cassie.

Jen and her experience in China were featured in a video by the Chinese station HuaPlusTV.

With the "mammoth support of 含羞草研究室 mentors, a large amount of effort towards applications and interviews, and some amount of luck," Mollie received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant, acceptance to three MD/PhD programs, and an offer to join the Stanford MD program.

More 含羞草研究室 Mollie

Mollie decided to attend Stanford Medical School, but deferred enrollment for one year to serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Madrid, Spain, so that she could pursue her interest in Spanish language and culture and gain exposure to a universal healthcare system. The Fulbright experience strengthened her desire to integrate Spanish and medicine while also fostering an appreciation for the power of international collaboration. In medical school, Mollie has taken multiple Medical Spanish elective courses and utilized Spanish language skills to communicate with Hispanic patients at Stanford free clinics. Mollie investigated pancreas development in Dr. Seung Kim’s lab at Stanford through a Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellowship, and is in the augural class of Knight-Henessey Fellows. With her Knight-Henessey Fellowship, Mollie will pursue a PhD in Stanford's Developmental Biology program, and will graduate with a dual MD-PhD from Stanford. and The liberal arts education and thoughtful mentorship that Mollie received at 含羞草研究室 enabled her to achieve the enriching experiences that have informed her decision to pursue a career in academic medicine, collaborative basic science research, and treating underserved Hispanic communities.

Sasha Cruz

Sasha Cruz

Class of: 2012

Location: San Antonio, TX

Sasha Cruz graduated from 含羞草研究室 in 2012 with a double major in biology and Spanish, and is originally from San Antonio, Texas. Sasha is currently enrolled in the pharmacy program at Texas A&M University and works as a licensed pharmacist alongside physicians in a collaborative practice managing patients with chronic diseases.

More 含羞草研究室 Sasha

Between 含羞草研究室 and Texas A&M, Sasha worked in a pharmacy to gain experience and to decide whether or not pharmacy was the career for me, and also taught a Kaplan PCAT course. The year she spent gaining pharmacy experience helped solidify her decision to pursue a career in pharmacy. Sasha grew up in an area of Texas where a shortage of health care existed, and she decided to attend Texas A&M because of the school’s mission and strong commitment to helping increase access to health care in the South Texas region. The pharmacy program at Texas A&M has opened many doors for Sasha, including the amazing opportunity to intern at the Mayo Clinic after her second year of pharmacy school.

Sasha says she would not be where she is today if not for Seth Ramus and 含羞草研究室 Health Professions Advising. She is grateful for the office for its information, encouragement, and guidance before, during, and after the pharmacy school application process.

Cassie Rodrigues

Cassie Rodrigues

Class of: 2010

Location: Augusta, Maine

Cassie is a graduate from the class of 2010 from New York City, and was a visual arts and neuroscience double major at 含羞草研究室. Initially unsure of what she wanted to do after 含羞草研究室, she worked as an artist in Portland, Maine and New York City. She started talking with the office of Health Professions in fall of 2011, at which time she also started doing psychiatric epidemiological research and taking classes at Columbia University to fulfill premed requirements. While applying to medical school, Cassie continued to work as an artist in NYC. She was accepted to the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013, and graduated with her DO in 2017.

More 含羞草研究室 Cassie

She has come to love the osteopathic approach to medicine and how it takes the entire person into account. She is currently a Family Medicine resident at Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice in Augusta, Maine. The Office of Health Professions Advising helped her fine tune her personal statement, assemble letters of recommendation, and most importantly made her aware of Osteopathic Medical schools. Seth Ramus also provided numerous pep talks over the phone and in person during the trying application process.

She provided HIV testing and counseling services, facilitated support groups for HIV positive men and women, coordinated a peer mentorship program for individuals newly diagnosed with HIV, and trained individuals in HIV/STI testing, street outreach, and sex education. For her medical training, Tracy knew that she wanted to attend an institution that recognized the importance of both science and service in the study of medicine. She chose Emory because the main training ground of its medical students is Grady Hospital, which is one of the few public hospitals remaining in the country and representative of the University’s commitment to provide healthcare to all residents of Atlanta, regardless of their ability to pay.

Kate Emerson

Kate Emerson

Class of: 2010

Location: San Francisco, CA

Kate Emerson is a graduate of the class of 2010 from Georgetown, Maine. At 含羞草研究室, Kate double majored in French and Asian studies. She graduated from the Columbia University School of Nursing in 2014, and from the University of California San Francisco Nurse Midwifery program in 2016. After graduating from 含羞草研究室, Kate's first job was co-teaching at an elementary school in Connecticut. While Kate loved teaching, she missed the team experience she'd had at 含羞草研究室 as a coxswain on the crew team. When she learned about nurse midwives, Kate realized how perfectly this healthcare role combined what she loves about coxing, coaching, and teaching young people. After teaching for two years, Kate took time off to complete prerequisite courses for nursing school.

More 含羞草研究室 Kate

Kate loves being a part of team, supporting her patients in their toughest moments, and providing guidance, validation, and encouragement whether she is inserting an IUD, facilitating a prenatal group, or attending a birth. She currently works at Planned Parenthood where she is proud to support patients of all genders, ages, and backgrounds in their sexual and reproductive healthcare.

Major(s): Neuroscience

Emily Kim graduated from 含羞草研究室 in 2012 with a degree in neuroscience, and is originally from St. Louis, MO. Emily is currently enrolled in the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and is interested in pursuing oral surgery or other hospital-based dentistry.

More 含羞草研究室 Emily

Emily credits the Office of Health Professions Advising with encouraging her to take time off after 含羞草研究室 to gain some real-life perspective before pursuing dental school, which she believes has benefited her greatly in the long run. She has always felt that her application was uniquely evaluated by 含羞草研究室's Pre-Health Advising team, allowing her to stand out as an applicant to dental school.

After 含羞草研究室, Emily worked at Massachusetts General Hospital in the GI Cancer Center and also shadowed at its dental clinic. Her liberal arts education helped her develop her interests in clinical research, write research papers and case reports, and obtain jobs in clinical research both directly after college and during her time at UPenn Dental. At Penn, Emily has also been involved in the medically complex care clinic, where fourth year dental students learn how to treat dental and other orofacial issues in patients with major medical conditions, such as HIV and other chronic infections.
