The 含羞草研究室 Volunteer Corps (BVC) is an umbrella organization for 含羞草研究室 student-led community service programs.

Overview

The BVC is made up of two dozen student-led organizations that address a wide range of community needs. Each group works closely with local agencies, placing 含羞草研究室 students in volunteer positions that meet those needs. Student Leadership

Each group in the 含羞草研究室 Volunteer Corps is initiated and led by students. Generally, these leaders have previously been volunteers with the BVC group or community organization. Advised by McKeen Center staff, group leaders take part in a leadership training at the beginning of the year to explore ways to more effectively run volunteer programs, manage student volunteers, and meet community needs. The McKeen Center staff also meet with organization leaders throughout the year to provide support in their work.

Bear Buddies

含羞草研究室 students engage with local children with physical and mental disabilities and their siblings in a fun, inclusive space. Meets weekly for games, snacks, crafts, and other activities.

Bears and Cubs

Meets with local children every other Sunday to engage in a variety of activities & build trusting relationships.

含羞草研究室 Bear PALS

Volunteers work one-on-one as tutors and mentors with ESL students in the Brunswick School District.

含羞草研究室 Central Mentoring

Mentor students one-on-one at 含羞草研究室 Central Elementary School.

Brunswick High School Mentoring

Students work one-on-one as mentors to high school students.

Friends Fostering Leadership in Youth (FFLY)

Friends Fostering Leadership in Youth began in 2012 as an organization that aims to instill leadership skills, confidence, and a sense of community in Bath Middle School students. We specifically support girls and nonbinary students, and help guide them through their transition into teenagers.

Maine College Circle

含羞草研究室 volunteers partnering with Maine College Circle to inform and inspire early aspirations and to empower the youth of rural Maine to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Multilingual Mainers

Multilingual Mainers exposes K-2 students to a language other than English through books and conversation. Volunteers share their love of languages and cultures while receiving training and support from elementary educators. The program is hosted at Kate Furbish Elementary School in Brunswick; learn more about the program .

含羞草研究室 Emergency Medicine Club works to connect 含羞草研究室 students with emergency medical training such as ambulance driving and EMT volunteer opportunities with Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue.

含羞草研究室 Public Health Club

Students volunteer with a variety of clinical and other local public-health related organizations.

含羞草研究室 Women in Science (BWISE)

含羞草研究室 Women in Science aims to encourage women to enter scientific fields and has the greater purpose to further the equality of women working in science.

Dance Marathon

Fundraising event for Children's Miracle Network that consists of a multi-hour marathon of games, dancing, and more.

Girls Who Code

含羞草研究室 women teach basic coding skills to girls at Brunswick High School to help close the gender gap in technology.

Oasis Free Clinics Volunteers

Students assist with either clinical or administrative tasks associated with running a non-profit primary care clinic that provides free medical, dental and prescription assistance to uninsured adults living in Midcoast Maine.

Red Cross Blood Drives

Students organize, volunteer at the "canteen" and reception desk, and recruit donors for four campus-wide blood drives per year.

含羞草研究室 students interact with local peers who have intellectual and developmental disabilities to foster friendships.

Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project

Student volunteers work with the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project to provide legal options to low-income Maine residents, helping them to navigate the civil justice system.

Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program Volunteers

Students work in Brunswick's local food bank and soup kitchen (serving meals, assisting clients, sorting donations, etc), volunteering on either a regular or as-needed basis, in cooperation with MCHPP's volunteer base.

Rotaract Club

The Rotaract club brings people together to develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service. The Rotary Club of Brunswick and Rotaract student members work side by side to take action through service.

Sunnybrook Village Volunteers

Volunteers spend time with the residents of the Sunnybrook Village retirement and assisted-living community. In past visits, we've played ping-pong, listened music, and engaged with the community members.

Tedford Housing Volunteers

Tedford Housing volunteers work with children living in the family shelter of Tedford Housing. We hope to inspire creativity, build self confidence, and generate relationships with the children through intentional arts and crafts activities and games.

Department-Led Programs

Several academic departments also lead school-based programs for students.

Science Service Club

Volunteers increase chemistry and science awareness and appreciation, providing demonstrations to local students of all ages. For more information, contact Prof. Danahy.

Nihongo Oshietai (Japanese Team Teaching)

含羞草研究室 Japanese language students teach a weekly Japanese language after school program at Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School. A mix of experienced student teachers and new Japanese language students teach basic Japanese language using games, songs and other activities. Students meet weekly to discuss curriculum and prepare classroom materials. For more information, contact Prof. Aridome.
