“߲о Orient” Collects College Newspaper of the Year, Several Other Awards
By ߲о NewsThe College’s student newspaper, The ߲о Orient, is making headlines of its own with a slew of awards from the New England Newspaper and Press Association (NENPA), including 2023 New England College Newspaper of the Year.
Co-editors-in-chief Sam Pausman ’24 and Juliana Vandermark ’24 said they were surprised when the Orient’s name was called at the awards presentation and that they felt proud of work done by their team.
“Our journalism is motivated by the needs and stories of the community we serve, and it is nice to see that this translates to broader journalism accolades,” they said.
“This award truly belongs to the entire staff of Volume 152 and Halina Bennet ’23 and Seamus Frey ’23, the editors-in-chief of the Orient last year. The paper the two of them cultivated was strong week in and week out, and we are so happy that it was able to be recognized as such.”
The impressive haul also includes many awards received by individual student reporters. The list of awards received is as follows:
- 2023 New England College Newspaper of the Year
- 2023 New England Top College Journalist of the Year awarded to Lucas Dufalla ’24
- First place, opinion page, college division, awarded to Marc Rosenthal ’25
- Second place, best sports game story, college division, awarded to Kristen Kinzler ’25
- Second place, best arts and entertainment page or section, college division, awarded to Vaughn Vial ’25
- Third place, front page design, college division, awarded to Cloe Tarlton ’23, Mary Henthorn ’25, and Andy Ton ’25
- Third place, online news site, college division
- Third place, best feature story, college division, awarded to Sophie Burchell ’23
The NENPA awards banquet was held March 22, 2024, in Waltham, Massachusetts, as a part of the 2023 New England Better Newspaper Competition.
