Associate Professor of Education
Professor Miller is a learning scientist who conducts design-based research around learning environments in the context of pre-K through grade 12 STEM education.

Miller focuses on students’ engagement with scientific and engineering practices (modeling, data analysis and interpretation, evidence-based argumentation, etc.) in both play-based early elementary environments and in secondary school classrooms. Additionally, she designs and studies the teacher professional learning and pedagogical strategies that support that engagement. She is particularly interested in nature-based education and in teaching and learning around models and visualizations in the context of Earth and Environmental Science.

Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Miller taught for nine years at the secondary level; that experience informs her research interests as well as her approach to preservice teacher education and teacher professional learning. Miller’s current project, Bridging Preschool and Kindergarten Science: Exploring Play-based Engagement with Scientific and Engineering Practices in Early Learning Environments (SciEPlay), is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
