Summer Employment

Experience a summer in Maine while working on campus, learning new skills, and earning a paycheck.

How to find a job:

  • Check Workday regularly. Summer jobs will be posted late January through April.
  • Ask around! Talk to professors and staff about summer job opportunities.
  • Contact SEO. We can help!

Timing is important. You must accept a campus job that is a minimum of 20 hours per week to qualify for on-campus summer housing. The application will open on April 2, 2024, and close on May 5, 2024. Summer housing is June 3, 2024, through August 11, 2024 and managed by the Office of Events & Summer Programs. Check out the Student Summer Housing website for more information.

Hours

During the summer, students may work up to 40 hours per week. This can be in one job, or a combination of multiple campus jobs.

Pay & Taxes

Pay rates are consistent with the academic year rates for the current year completed (AY 2023-2024).

All earnings during the summer payroll (May 20, 2024 – August 25, 2024) are subject to FICA taxes. During the academic year, students are exempt from FICA taxes, however the exemption is not applicable during the summer payroll. Be prepared that this will impact your paycheck!

Rent

For summer 2024, rent is $80 per week. Rent will be deducted from your biweekly paycheck, based on your lease agreement.

FAQs - Fellowships, Funded Internships and Campus Employment

Q. If I accept a summer fellowship or CXD funded internship, can I also work a campus job over the summer?

A. No, if you have accepted a fellowship or were awarded a funded internship through CXD, you cannot work on-campus at the same time. On rare occasions a fellowship has a part-time expectation instead of full-time. If so, contact SEO to discuss.

Q. My fellowship/internship does not start until June 10, can I work Commencement and Reunion?

A. Yes, you can work a campus job before the fellowship begins. It just cannot overlap with the fellowship/internship.

Q. My fellowship is 8 weeks. Once complete, can I work a campus job, if available?

A. Yes, provided there is no overlap, and the fellowship is complete.

Q. I have accepted an internship and will receive funding through CXD. It’s a remote opportunity with flexible hours. Can I also work on campus?

A. No, if you receive full funding from CXD for an internship, the expectation is that you will work full time. You cannot work a campus job in addition to the internship.
