Engaged Anthropology Prize

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” This statement is as true today as when it was first asserted by Margaret Mead, one of anthropology’s best-known scholars. This prize honors Anthropology majors and minors who integrate exemplary engagement in community service, public education, and/or public scholarship with perspectives gained in the discipline. The prize recognizes student efforts to bring attention to issues of broad significance, collaborate with diverse communities, and/or critically reflect on various dimensions of cultural life and intercultural interaction. Since its beginning in the 19th century, Anthropology has been shaped significantly by intellectual traditions that have sought social progress through research, education, and direct service on issues of public significance. This award honors those students who have demonstrated excellence in these continuing endeavors.

EligibilitySeniorsjuniors, and sophomores who are majoring or minoring in anthropology are eligible for the award. Individuals may nominate themselves or others for the award each spring. More than one student can receive this prize in a year.
